This study analyzes the effect of earthquake duration on the dynamic response of idealized single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structural systems. The research arises from the need to consider additional parameters beyond peak ground acceleration (PGA) to more accurately evaluate structural behavior. A linear model with viscous damping was used, and real earthquake records scaled to the same PGA but with durations of 5, 10, and 20 seconds were applied. The dynamic response was obtained using the Newmark numerical method, focusing on the maximum relative displacement. The results show a growing trend in displacement as the duration of the seismic event increases, evidencing greater energy accumulation and deformation. The main contribution of this study lies in highlighting the significance of earthquake duration as a relevant parameter, even in early design stages, proposing its inclusion in structural seismic analysis to improve design accuracy and safety.
