This study aims to econometrically analyse the determinants of monthly household expenditure on domestic animals in the canton of Machala, through the application of a multiple linear regression model, in order to identify the statistical significance of economic and sociodemographic variables in this consumption category. Data were collected through surveys administered to a sample of 80 households, using Stata 17 for econometric processing. The study adopts a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional approach. The main findings reveal that monthly income, female household headship, childless household status, and the number of pets are statistically associated with monthly pet expenditure, whereas self-employment shows a marginal negative association. In particular, monthly income centred at USD 600 shows an estimated positive marginal effect of USD 2.93 for each additional USD 100. The model presents a coefficient of determination of 0.281, indicating moderate explanatory capacity. As a complementary methodological contribution, the study preliminarily proposes an operational minimum sample of 160 real households for future research on this topic, guided by a statistical power calculation and illustrated through an exploratory uniform expansion exercise.
